Job Description
The Float Pharmacist provides professional pharmacy coverage across multiple assigned pharmacy locations to maintain service continuity, support staffing requirements, and ensure that patients continue to receive safe and timely medication services. The position performs the core responsibilities of a Staff Pharmacist while adapting to different locations, operating procedures, staffing arrangements, prescription volumes, and customer-service expectations. The role may involve travel between stores and flexible scheduling to cover planned absences, unexpected staffing shortages, seasonal demand, or operational requirements.
Responsibilities include reviewing and verifying prescriptions, dispensing medications, counseling patients, assessing potential medication interactions, supervising pharmacy technicians, and maintaining accurate records. The Float Pharmacist must become familiar with each assigned location’s pharmacy systems, inventory procedures, security controls, and escalation processes. The position also communicates with pharmacy managers, documents outstanding issues, and ensures that prescription workflows are transferred appropriately when shifts or coverage assignments change.
The pharmacist is expected to maintain consistent professional standards regardless of location, resolve routine operational challenges, and prioritize patient safety during busy periods. Additional duties may include supporting immunization services, assisting with audits, providing temporary leadership coverage, and helping pharmacies improve workflow efficiency. A current pharmacist license appropriate to the locations served, strong clinical knowledge, adaptability, communication skills, and willingness to travel between assigned sites are generally required.
